Halloween for Grown Ups 2016: If you are an empty nester, your kids have aged out of Halloween celebrations or you just want an All Hallows Eve themed break from the boo-feats and pumpkin carving workshops – here are eleven grown-up ways to observe the great holiday that remembers the Dead, the Un-Dead and The Grateful Dead.
Jay Ghoul’s House of Curiosities, Lyndhurst Mansion: Fri-Sun, Fir-Sun, 10/14-16, Thurs-Sun, 10/20-23 & Wed-Mon, 10/26-31: Experience the only indoor Halloween venue in Westchester. Long-dead family members lead you on a spooky tour of the Lyndhurst mansion. Guests will experience the spectacular gothic castle at night and in a way rarely seen. Local! After Dark Halloween Marathon, Jacob Burns – Fri, 10/21: 9:30pm: Stay up all night at J. Burns’ annual Halloween Marathon! Hosted by JBFC Senior Programmer Andrew Jupin, this year’s marathon features eight films including: the new 4k restoration of Don Coscarelli’sPhantasm, the return of the We Hate Movies comedy podcast doing a live commentary over the ridiculous 1989 cult classic Death Spa, the over-the-top trip to Hell Jigoku, a special preview of a much-buzzed film hot off the festival circuit – and four more. There’s a costume contest and activities in the Jane Peck Gallery, and the concession stand will be open all night with plenty of coffee! The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Tarrytown Music Hall – Sat, 10/22: 11pm: Get the full Rocky Horror experience with this late night screening of the cult classic with Brad and Janet, Dr. Frank-n-Furter, Riff-Raff, Columbia & Magenta, Rocky, Dr. Scott and Meatloaf as Eddy. With a live floor show from Rocky Horror performers (including Frank-n-Furter and many of the 8th Street Playhouse cast) who will be performing in their Rocky Horror Floorshow. Gravedigger’s Tale, Boscobel – Wed-Sat, 10/26-29 & Sun & Mon, 10/30-31: Meet the amiable grave-maker: the houses that he makes last till doomsday. Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival presents seven performances on Halloween weekend of Robert Richmond and Louis Butelli’s work Gravedigger’s Tale – originally produced at Folger Theatre in Washington DC. Your Gravedigger, appearing briefly in Act V of Hamlet, arrives onstage at the Boscobel Mansion with a trunk and a book, using Shakespeare’s moving words, traditional music, and help from the audience to bring this enduring story to life. A Taste of Westchester, The Horse & Hound Inn, Ghosts? – Thurs, 10/27: 6-8pm. Husband and wife team, Silvano and Sue Vales share stories of spirit sightings at the inn at this annual cooking class and gourmet boo fest. Your meal starts with an amuse bouche of braised pork belly with chipotle aioli. Then the lesson begins with Sue’s preparation of seared scallops over butternut squash risotto. For the main course, she demonstrates how to prep, pan sear and deglaze pork with peaches and bourbon. Frankenstein – The Movie Score, Chappaqua Orchestra, Nyack HS – Fri, 10/28: 8pm: The Chappaqua Orchestra, under the direction of Music Director and composer Michael Shapiro, perform his original score simultaneously with the classic early talkie with Boris Karloff and Colin Clive. Under the auspices of ArtsRock, the concert will be preceded by an interview of the composer by WQXR radio personality Elliott Forrest. Rocky Horror Picture Show, North Castle Public Library, Fri, 10/28: 7pm: LIU Professor Valerie Franco gives her Friday night film series over to absolute pleasure. She invites everyone to dress up, bring your props (rice, newspaper, squirt gun, confetti, toast, toilet paper, bell and cards) and call out your favorite lines, “Castles don’t have phones asshole.” (Is this weird to have in the library or cool?) Frankenstein, National Theatre Live, Ridgefield Playhouse – Mon. 10/31: 7pm: Directed by Academy Award®-winner Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire, Steve Jobs), this thrilling production features Benedict Cumberbatch (BBC’s Sherlock, The Imitation Game) and Jonny Lee Miller (CBS’s Elementary, Trainspotting) alternating roles as Victor Frankenstein and his creation. The production was a sell-out hit at the National Theatre in 2011.
