Yorktown Grange Fair: Westchester’s only true country fair has showcased home grown and home made vegetables, flowers, baked goods, livestock, poultry, needlework, and photography since 1923. Expect antique tractor and animal parades, livestock exhibits, horse competitions, hay rides, magic shows, watermelon, pie eating, balloon blowing, nail driving and rubber chicken throwing competitions, (the stuff memories are made of) carnival rides, and funnel cakes. New this year, A Taste of NY tent offers free tastings and sale items from New York food and beverage vendors. Local! John Jay Barn Dance: It’s the event of the season in Bedford. The annual John Jay Barn Dance serves up a countryBBQ, a pizza truck, ice cream sundaes, and the Johnny Peers Muttville Comix, an act featuring dogs rescued from shelters. Local! Oktoberfest on the Village Green returns: This one, under the big tent on Bedford Green, was a big hit last year and it’s back. The festivities include craft beers, including a custom made “Bedford Brew”, wine tastings, seasonal food live and the impeccable charm and grace that is Bedford Village. Last year’s band was Lo Tide, the Bedford School of Rock house band. The Bedford Historical Society that maintains nine historical buildings including Historical Hall, the one room school house, the Lounsbery Building and the Court House and Bedford Museum sponsors this event. Local! The Pound Ridge Harvest Festival ROCKS: Contests, games and activities for kids and families. Crafts at Lyndhurst: New York’s largest craft show is set on the grounds of the historic Lyndhurst estate and showcases 300 artists and crafts people offering one-of-a-kind jewelry, fashion & accessories, furniture & home decor, and functional and sculptural work in ceramics, glass, metal, painting, photography, wood and mixed media. There are also craft demonstrations, gourmet specialty foods and for kids there is a stilt walker, face painting and storytelling. And, of course, the fabulous mansion of the late, great railroad developer and financier in the age of the Robber Baron, Jay Gould. And those views of the Hudson River. Pretty spesh. Armonk Outdoor Art Show Weekend Activities: Consistently ranked one of the country’s top art shows by Sunshine Artist Magazine, the 54th annual Armonk Outdoor Art Show features over 185 juried artists (42 new artists) in a broad spectrum of media including painting, photography, sculpture, pastels, printmaking, drawing, mixed media and wearable art. There’s a children’s activity booth, personal shoppers and a food court. The art show, sponsored by Friends of the North Castle Public Library, has become a weekend long series of events with a free movie and a free music concert at the library. This year’s movie is Tim’s Vermeer, directed by Teller and produced by Penn Gillette about Tim Jenison’s effort to duplicate the painting techniques of Johannes Vermeer to test his theory that the artist painted with the help of optical devices. This fine craft show features 100 craft artists selling one-of-a-kind jewelry, leather, wearable fiber and glass, metal, wood, clay, photography and mixed media arts and crafts. Gold in Your Attic – New Castle Historical Society: This year’s Gold in Your Attic Show and Sale will be a stand-alone event as NCHS will not be holding it’s annual Antiques Show. NCHS will showcase donated or consigned treasures from the community. In recent years a rare Russian samovar, an opaline glass light fixture from Paris, vintage embroidered Japanese kimonos, Tiffany candlesticks, antique rocking chairs, desks, mirrors and artwork have been featured for sale. This event raises funds to support the Horace Greeley House Museum and its events for students, adults and researchers. The show will be held in November at a time and place to be determined. 5th Annual Church Tavern Biathlon: This 7 mile bike and 4 mile run on hilly secondary roads, circles Truesdale Lake and offers a scenic vista of Lewisboro from the top of Mount Church Tavern. Be prepared for a 602-foot ascent on the bike course and a 414-foot ascent on the run. There is also a run or walk only race. The race ends with a free BBQ, music from Quadrasaurus, a water slide for kids and medals for all. St. John’s Episcopal Church sponsors the race to benefit The Carpenter’s Kids Program, Community Center of Northern Westchester and The Wounded Warrior Project. Last year’s race raised $6,400. The Garden Conservancy’s Open Days: You can visit three local gardens on The Garden Conservancy’s Open Days program on Sat, 9/12. Including the Dick Button Ice Pond Farm at 115 June Rd., In North Salem that is featured in The Garden Conservancy’s new book Outstanding American Gardens: A Celebration – 25 Years of The Garden Conservancy. It features a valley with an Ice Pond, a stone wall that thinks it’s a roller coaster, an outhouse with a view, a vegetable garden, a smattering of stone, iron and other minor oddities (12-5pm); The Garden of Bernard Marquez and Tim Fish at 74 Hemlock Rd., South Salem that was featured in a recent edition of Garden Design magazine. It consists of several garden rooms on different levels, featuring a variety of uncommon boxwoods, conifer cultivars, annuals, perennials and artifacts. There are water elements, stonework and a view of the Pound Ridge Reservation. Bicycle Sundays: Bicycle Sundays return for the month of September.A six and a half mile stretch of the Bronx River Parkway will be closed for the exclusive use of bicyclists, joggers, scooters and strollers every Sunday in September. The Sarah Bishop Bushwack 10K Trail Race: This challenging 10K trail race in Mountain Lakes Park in N. Salem traverses the park’s 1,000 acres of scenic woodlands, beautiful vistas, over streams and around the lakes that give the park its name. The course features 1,000 feet of total elevation gain taking runners over Bailey Mountain – which at 982 feet is Westchester’s highest point. There is also a 1.5 mile walk/run event called Sarah’s Scramble for kids, hikers and walkers This event benefits Northern Westchester Hospital School Health and Wellness Programs. Local! The Garden Conservancy’s Open Days: Featured in the Garden Conservancy’s new book, Outstanding American Gardens, Iroki, the home and garden of Judy and Michael Steinhardt in Mt. Kisco will be open to the public on Saturday, October 31 from 9am-5pm. This fifty-eight-acre rolling estate is offers extensive collections of Japanese maples, conifers, cypripediums, camellias, dahlias, alpines, ferns, and rare woodland plants, all artfully composed within various gardens throughout the property. There are several unique bridges (including a rope and a moss bridge), a “stick house” and secret paths. There is a Japanese Maple Garden, a yellow garden, orchards, a perennial garden, a vegetable garden, an ornamental grass garden, and an experimental garden. Trees and plants are labeled throughout the garden. Please note that due to rough terrain and unpaved paths, this garden is not handicapped accessible. Local! Bedford Turkey Trot: 7th annual 5K run and 2-mile walk. It’s billed as the hardest 5K in New York. Raises funds for Bedford Community Table/Pantry. The course begins on Court Road at Bedford Village Elementary School in historic Bedford Village, NY. The halfway point is just past the top of Indian Hill Road – not for the faint of heart. John Jay Founders Lecture: Joseph Ellis discusses his new book, The Quartet: Orchestrating the Second American Revolution, 1783-1789, the story of how the young United States abandoned the Articles of Confederation in favor of a new Constitution. Ellis arguing that the change was as consequential as the Declaration of Independence – a true second Revolution. He depicts his “Quartet” – Washington, Hamilton, Madison and Jay – as acting in sympathy and concert for years, to design and implement a true national government. Joseph Ellis is one of the country’s leading scholars of American history. The author of eight books, he won the Pulitzer Prize for Founding Brothers: The Revolutionary Generation and the National Book Award for American Sphinx: The Character of Thomas Jefferson.
