New York Botanical Garden, The Orchid Show: Key West Contemporary: This year’s orchid exhibition in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory takes its cues from the gardens of a modernist Key West estate. There are a variety of Key West themed events and activities throughout the seven week period, including musical performances, a curated poetry walk, and Saturday night Orchid Evenings where you can sip your way through the conservatory, cocktail in hand. Dennis Elsas: Rock and Roll Never Forgets, NCPL: Join legendary radio personality Dennis Elsas for this live multimedia experience featuring highlights from his history making interviews with Pete Townsend, Elton John, Jerry Garcia and more. His 1974 John Lennon interview is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Television and Radio. Elsas was one of the pioneers of progressive FM radio at WNEW-FM. Leatherman’s Loop: This 10k trail race has been held each spring at the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation since 1987. The Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk: The Norwalk Aquarium is building a new research vessel that will offer maritime life cruises on the Long Island Sound beginning in May. Revolutionary in design, this new catamaran will run virtually silently on electric power for their 2½-hour “study cruises” on Long Island Sound. This 65-foot all-aluminum vessel will replace their current 34-year-old diesel-powered trawler. The vessel, built in Mamaroneck, will double their cruise capacity and cut diesel consumption by 75%. The Aquariums Marine Life Study Cruises will be offer at 1pm on Saturdays in May and June, daily in July and August and on Saturdays in September and October. Kykuit opens May 3: This hilltop paradise was home to four generations of the Rockefeller family, beginning with John D. Rockefeller, founder of Standard Oil. Now a historic site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Kykuit has been meticulously maintained for more than 100 years. Guided tours include the main rooms of the six-story stone house; the terraced gardens with Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller’s collection of 20th-century sculptures from artists such as Pablo Picasso, Henry Moore, Alexander Calder, Louise Nevelson, and David Smith; the underground art galleries with Governor Rockefeller’s collection of Picasso tapestries; and the Coach Barn, with its collections of classic automobiles and horse-drawn carriages.
