The Barkley Marathons: The Race That Eats Its Young – Jacob Burns: In 25 years, only ten people have finished The Barkley Marathons. This 100-mile run (and 60 mile fun run) on an unmarked course around Lazarus Lake in Frozen Head State Park near Wartburg, Tennessee attracts a cult-like following each spring who are tempted to test the limits of their physical and mental endurance. This documentary contemplates the value of pain in a society that favors comfort by exploring the successes and failures of the marathon’s runners. Menus in the Movies – Chappaqua Library: Food author and film buff Carol Durst screens movies where food is the star, supporting cast, thematic element or important part of the set design. Each screening is followed by a movie chat and home-baked desserts. The Age of Innocence: Martin Scorcese’s take on Edith Wharton’s novel about nineteenth century New York high society in which a young lawyer (Daniel Day Lewis) falls in love with a woman (Michelle Pfeiffer) separated from her husband, while he is engaged to the woman’s cousin (Winona Ryder). Frank Capra Film Series – Schoolhouse Theater: Here’s a fun one up in Croton Falls. This new film series will screen three Frank Capra classics this winter. Including, Capra’s seminal screwball comedy It Happened One Night, that won all five major Academy Awards in 1934. Starring Clarke Gable and Claudette Colbert: Thurs, 1/14: 7:30pm. In Meet John Doe, the last of Capra’s social statement films, Barbara Stanwyck’s farewell newspaper column sparks a political movement she does not expect. Thurs, 2/11: 7:30pm. Capra’s romantic comedy, You Can’t Take it With You, adapted from the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, features James Stewart and Jean Arthur in an unlikely romantic pairing of a rich man’s son and a regular gal from a highly irregular and decidedly eccentric family. Music at the Chappaqua Library – Flutist Katrina Elsnik and pianist Yalin Chi take a musical nature walk in a program that includes Franz Schubert’s Introduction and Variations on Trockne Blumen, Carla Reinecke’s Sonata Undine and The Wren and Polka on piccolo by Eugene Damare. John Jay Lecture Series: Darden Smith and Mary Judd, Songwriting With Soldiers – The Civil War Diary of Our Times: Songwriting With Soldiers pairs professional songwriters with active duty and veteran service members to produce songs about their experiences. The evening will include a performance as well as information about the program. Darden Smith, Creative Director, is a singer-songwriter based in Austin, Texas, who founded the program after performing in a military hospital in Germany in 2012; Mary Judd is an educator and the program’s Executive Director. Special Event: Another Telepathic Thing – Jacob Burns: When Big Dance Theater’s Another Telepathic Thing debuted in 2000, director Jonathan Demme was on hand to film the “elegant and haunting” production (Village Voice). Choreographed by Annie-B Parson and directed by Paul Lazar, it deftly intercuts songs and dialogue based on real Hollywood auditions with Mark Twain’s The Mysterious Stranger, in which a charismatic visitor shatters the peace of a 16th-century village by conjuring diabolic wonders. Bedford Art Show: The 43rd Annual Bedford Art Show kicks off with a preview party on Fri, 1/22 that includes a champagne reception, hors d’oeuvres and desserts from G.E. Brown, Campagna, DiNardo’s Restaurant and Happiness Is. The show weekend continues on Sat. & Sun. featuring a mix of contemporary and traditional art, sculpture, photography, jewelry and tabletop items. This year’s show, co-chaired by Laura Blau of Bedford and Laurie Sturz of Pound Ridge features several artists from the NYC art collective Chashama. Harvey Presents: An Evening with Actress Glenn Close: Stage, screen and TV actress Glenn Close, a six time Academy Award nominee and winner of three Tonys and three Emmys, will appear at the Harvey School’s Walker Center for the Arts in a special Q&A with the Emmy Award-winning film and theater critic Pat Collins. Best known for her debut performance in Adrian Lyne’s smash hit Fatal Attraction, Close has received Oscar nods for The World According to Garp, The Big Chill, The Natural, Dangerous Liaisons, Albert Nobbs and Fatal Attraction. Itzhak Perlman with Rohan DeSilva – County Center: Violin impresario Itzhak Perlman and pianist Rohan De Silva make their first ever appearance at the Westchester County Center. The 2015-16 season commemorates Itzhak Perlman’s 70th birthday with three album releases and worldwide concert tours. Harlem Wizards vs. The Chappaqua Challengers: Chappaqua school district teachers and administrators take on the Harlem Wizards in an afternoon of basketball and comedy. This event is sponsored by the Chappaqua School Foundation and benefits all Chappaqua schools. In 2015 the Chappaqua School Foundation raised over $210,000 and made 14 grants to the High School, Middle and Elementary Schools for physics and visual arts lab equipment, SMART boards and English Interactive Monitors, Cintiq digital drawing tablets, a world language lab, marching band instruments, and the FitBit Run Across America research project among others. Purchase Film Series: Documentary Now –Performing Arts Center: In this new collaboration with Purchase College, Film & Media faculty curate and moderate screenings of the best in contemporary documentary film. Ivory Tower: Professor Brandon Harris screens and moderates a Q&A with Director Andrew Rossi whose 2014 timely doc asks the question , “Is college worth the cost?” The film examines the vast costs and perceived benefits of higher education in the United States as tuition rates spiral and student loan debt passes $1 trillion – more than credit card debt. John Jay Lecture Series: Kevin M. Murphy, Anglo-American Portraiture in an Era of Revolution: Kevin Murphy, curator of American art at Williams College, examines the works of Gilbert Stuart, Benjamin West, Jean-Antoine Houdon and John Trumbull from the Homestead’s art collection for signs of revolutionary fervor. And discusses his new book, American Encounters: Anglo-American Portraiture in an era of Revolution, that grew out of a series of exhibition collaborations between the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, The High Museum, Musee du Louvre and Terra Foundation for American Art. King: A Filmed Record … Montgomery to Memphis – Jacob Burns: Jacob Burns presents a special Martin Luther King Day screening of King: A Filmed Record…Montgomery to Memphis. The film follows Dr. King from 1955 to 1968, in his rise from regional activist to world-renowned leader of the Civil Rights movement. Richard Valeriani, an NBC News correspondent for 28 years, who covered the assassination of JFK and the Civil Rights Movement, will introduce the event. Menus in the Movies – Chappaqua Library: Alice’s Restaurant: Arthur Penn’s adaptation of Arlo Guthrie’s folk song “Alice’s Restaurant Massacree” begins with Thanksgiving dinner and ends with a hippie-style wedding. Winter Farm to Table Supper – Stamford Museum & Nature Center: Chef Scott Miller, former Executive Chef of Max’s Oyster Bar and Connecticut’s Chef of the Year in 2011, will prepare a full farm to table experience in the Bendel Mansion. The evening begins with artisanal hors d’oeuvres and cocktails at an exclusive gallery tour led by featured New York artist Peter Bradley of the new pop-up exhibition Extreme Art: Massive & Miniature – with artworks from the permanent collection of the Stamford Museum & Nature Center. New York Botanical Garden, The Orchid Show: NYBG’s annual orchid exhibition in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory is one of the most popular of their annual events. This six-week exhibition comes well-programmed with special events and performances including live music, poetry walks, and Orchid Evenings where you can sip your way through the conservatory – cocktail in hand- while you take in one of the world’s most extensive, beautiful and meticulously curated exhibitions of orchids. A Taste of Westchester – Pour Café, Mt. Kisco: These cooking classes from Westchester Community College feature demonstrations, practical tips and tastings. This one from Pour Café takes on a Bubbles and Crust theme as proprietor Anthony Colasacco demonstrates his preparation for bruschetta and crostini with walnut pesto and fresh ricotta with truffle honey sprinkled with smoked sea salt, green peas, mint and Parmesan. James, Pour’s barman and cocktail historian, provides a hands-on demonstration how to make Aperol Spritz with Prosecco where everyone gets a turn stepping behind the bar to shake (not stir) this specialty cocktail. John Jay Lecture Series: Nicholas A. Robinson, The Forest Charter and Magna Carta: Evolving Human Rights in Nature: The Forest Charter was the vehicle through which the 800-year-old Magna Carta was kept effective, restraining the power of kings to collect from their subjects the funds needed to pay for wars. It also created the first lasting principles for negotiating competing claims on the natural world – a “rule of law for nature.” Nicholas Robinson has been a leader in the field of Environmental Law since its birth, and is currently University Professor for the Environment at Pace Law School and Co-Director of its Global Center for Environmental Legal Studies, and an Adjunct Professor at the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies. A Taste of Westchester – DeCicco & Sons, Armonk: Chef Angelo Ruiz will teach the techniques used to make one of their wonderful catering appetizers, polenta canapés with Boursin cheese and ratatouille. The lesson will continue with a special presentation of stuffed grilled chicken breast with artichokes, sundried tomatoes, and Parmesan, laced with a pesto aioli and served over a broccoli rabe risotto.
