INSIDE THE NEU, The Making of Lesley Dill’s Rush: In early 2021, the Neuberger Museum of Art will present Lesley Dill’s Rush, a large, dramatic, site-responsive work that premiered at the Museum in 2007 and then acquired for its permanent collection. In honor of the reinstallation of Rush, join today’s online program with the museum’s Chief Curator Helaine Posner for a screening of “We Are Animals of Language,” a documentary by Ed Robbins about making all the work that was included in “Lesley Dill: Tremendous World” at the Neuberger in 2007.
Dill uses a wide range of media and methods to explore themes of language, the body, and what it means to be transformed by an experience. Her work explores the role of language and image to take us towards enlightenment. In “Rush,” a small, seated figure of a male in meditation, reminiscent of Rodin’s “The Thinker,” begins the journey. Billowing from his head is his train of thought, a veritable thought cloud, represented here in a collage of hundreds of interconnected metallic animal and human figures. “Dill’s sculptures are less visual objects for detached aesthetic contemplation than knotty philosophical puzzles that use sculpture as a launching pad.” (New York Times 2007)
